“He has put my brethren far from me, and my acquaintances are wholly estranged from me.


All my intimate friends abhor me, and those whom I loved have turned against me.


I will not set before my eyes anything that is base. I hate the work of those who fall away; it shall not cleave to me.


For I hear many whispering. Terror is on every side! “Denounce him! Let us denounce him!” say all my familiar friends, watching for my fall. “Perhaps he will be deceived, then we can overcome him, and take our revenge on him.”


All your allies have deceived you, they have driven you to the border; your confederates have prevailed against you; your trusted friends have set a trap under you— there is no understanding of it.


Put no trust in a neighbor, have no confidence in a friend; guard the doors of your mouth from her who lies in your bosom;


He answered, “He who has dipped his hand in the dish with me, will betray me.


I am not speaking of you all; I know whom I have chosen; it is that the scripture may be fulfilled, ‘He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.’


“But Jeshurun waxed fat, and kicked; you waxed fat, you grew thick, you became sleek; then he forsook God who made him, and scoffed at the Rock of his salvation.
