Then Benaiah the son of Jehoiada went up, and struck him down and killed him; and he was buried in his own house in the wilderness.


Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has risen no one greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.


As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to behold? A reed shaken by the wind?


And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”


For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the harlots believed him; and even when you saw it, you did not afterward repent and believe him.


Bear fruit that befits repentance,


and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent, and believe in the gospel.”


As it is written in Isaiah the prophet, “Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way;


And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways,


When the messengers of John had gone, he began to speak to the crowds concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to behold? A reed shaken by the wind?


beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us—one of these men must become with us a witness to his resurrection.”


And now, behold, the Lord has kept me alive, as he said, these forty-five years since the time that the Lord spoke this word to Moses, while Israel walked in the wilderness; and now, lo, I am this day eighty-five years old.


And the descendants of the Kenite, Moses' father-in-law, went up with the people of Judah from the city of palms into the wilderness of Judah, which lies in the Negeb near Arad; and they went and settled with the people.
