All in vain have I kept my heart clean and washed my hands in innocence.


“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.


And the Lord said: “Because this people draw near with their mouth and honor me with their lips, while their hearts are far from me, and their fear of me is a commandment of men learned by rote;


I will do this to you: I will appoint over you sudden terror, consumption and fever that waste the eyes and cause life to pine away. And you shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it;


and your strength shall be spent in vain, for your land shall not yield its increase, and the trees of the land shall not yield their fruit.


You have said, ‘It is vain to serve God. What is the good of our keeping his charge or of walking as in mourning before the Lord of hosts?


And he called the people to him and said to them, “Hear and understand:


in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the precepts of men.’


by which you are saved, if you hold it fast—unless you believed in vain.


“Everything that I command you shall be careful to do; you shall not add to it or take from it.


nor to occupy themselves with myths and endless genealogies which promote speculations rather than the divine training that is in faith;


instead of giving heed to Jewish myths or to commands of men who reject the truth.


Do not be led away by diverse and strange teachings; for it is well that the heart be strengthened by grace, not by foods, which have not benefited their adherents.


Do you want to be shown, you shallow man, that faith apart from works is barren?


I warn every one who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if any one adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book,


Now David had said, “Surely in vain have I guarded all that this fellow has in the wilderness, so that nothing was missed of all that belonged to him; and he has returned me evil for good.
