4 If Edom says, “We are shattered but we will rebuild the ruins,” the Lord of hosts says, “They may build, but I will tear down, till they are called the wicked country, the people with whom the Lord is angry for ever.”

If he tears down, none can rebuild; if he shuts a man in, none can open.


When he is quiet, who can condemn? When he hides his face, who can behold him, whether it be a nation or a man?—


He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength —who has hardened himself against him, and succeeded?—


Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.


Remember, O Lord, against the Edomites the day of Jerusalem, how they said, “Raze it, raze it! Down to its foundations!”


The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to naught; he frustrates the plans of the peoples.


No wisdom, no understanding, no counsel, can avail against the Lord.


Nothing remains but to crouch among the prisoners or fall among the slain. For all this his anger is not turned away and his hand is stretched out still.


But they shall swoop down upon the shoulder of the Philistines in the west, and together they shall plunder the people of the east. They shall put forth their hand against Edom and Moab, and the Ammonites shall obey them.


Night and day it shall not be quenched; its smoke shall go up for ever. From generation to generation it shall lie waste; none shall pass through it for ever and ever.


For my sword has drunk its fill in the heavens; behold, it descends for judgment upon Edom, upon the people I have doomed.


There is hope for your future, says the Lord, and your children shall come back to their own country.


Therefore hear the plan which the Lord has made against Edom and the purposes which he has formed against the inhabitants of Teman: Even the little ones of the flock shall be dragged away; surely their fold shall be appalled at their fate.


Concerning Edom. Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Is wisdom no more in Teman? Has counsel perished from the prudent? Has their wisdom vanished?


Flee, turn back, dwell in the depths, O inhabitants of Dedan! For I will bring the calamity of Esau upon him, the time when I punish him.


They shall eat up your harvest and your food; they shall eat up your sons and your daughters; they shall eat up your flocks and your herds; they shall eat up your vines and your fig trees; your fortified cities in which you trust they shall destroy with the sword.”


Who has commanded and it came to pass, unless the Lord has ordained it?


You shall fall by the sword; I will judge you at the border of Israel; and you shall know that I am the Lord.


therefore thus says the Lord God, I will stretch out my hand against Edom, and cut off from it man and beast; and I will make it desolate; from Teman even to Dedan they shall fall by the sword.


And I will lay my vengeance upon Edom by the hand of my people Israel; and they shall do in Edom according to my anger and according to my wrath; and they shall know my vengeance, says the Lord God.


I will make you a bare rock; you shall be a place for the spreading of nets; you shall never be rebuilt; for I the Lord have spoken, says the Lord God.


I will lay your cities waste, and you shall become a desolation; and you shall know that I am the Lord.


I will make you a perpetual desolation, and your cities shall not be inhabited. Then you will know that I am the Lord.


Thus says the Lord: “For three transgressions of Edom, and for four, I will not revoke the punishment; because he pursued his brother with the sword, and cast off all pity, and his anger tore perpetually, and he kept his wrath for ever.


I will smite the winter house with the summer house; and the houses of ivory shall perish, and the great houses shall come to an end,” says the Lord.


Therefore because you trample upon the poor and take from him exactions of wheat, you have built houses of hewn stone, but you shall not dwell in them; you have planted pleasant vineyards, but you shall not drink their wine.


For behold, the Lord commands, and the great house shall be smitten into fragments, and the little house into bits.


Pass over to Calneh, and see; and thence go to Hamath the great; then go down to Gath of the Philistines. Are they better than these kingdoms? Or is their territory greater than your territory,


The vision of Obadiah. Thus says the Lord God concerning Edom: We have heard tidings from the Lord, and a messenger has been sent among the nations: “Rise up! let us rise against her for battle!”


For the violence done to your brother Jacob, shame shall cover you, and you shall be cut off for ever.


but I have hated Esau; I have laid waste his hill country and left his heritage to jackals of the desert.”
