And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, “Which commandment is the first of all?”


For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.”


He said to him, “What is written in the law? How do you read?”


And a ruler asked him, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”

This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground.


For if the inheritance is by the law, it is no longer by promise; but God gave it to Abraham by a promise.
