and they will be dismayed. Pangs and agony will seize them; they will be in anguish like a woman in travail. They will look aghast at one another; their faces will be aflame.


In that day the Egyptians will be like women, and tremble with fear before the hand which the Lord of hosts shakes over them.


They shall be turned back and utterly put to shame, who trust in graven images, who say to molten images, “You are our gods.”


Therefore the anger of the Lord was kindled against his people, and he stretched out his hand against them and smote them, and the mountains quaked; and their corpses were as refuse in the midst of the streets. For all this his anger is not turned away and his hand is stretched out still.


For I hear many whispering. Terror is on every side! “Denounce him! Let us denounce him!” say all my familiar friends, watching for my fall. “Perhaps he will be deceived, then we can overcome him, and take our revenge on him.”


Why has Apis fled? Why did not your bull stand? Because the Lord thrust him down.


Even her hired soldiers in her midst are like fatted calves; yea, they have turned and fled together, they did not stand; for the day of their calamity has come upon them, the time of their punishment.


Their tents and their flocks shall be taken, their curtains and all their goods; their camels shall be borne away from them, and men shall cry to them: ‘Terror on every side!’


Behold, I will bring terror upon you, says the Lord God of hosts, from all who are round about you, and you shall be driven out, every man straight before him, with none to gather the fugitives.


Go not forth into the field, nor walk on the road; for the enemy has a sword, terror is on every side.


I will make many peoples appalled at you, and their kings shall shudder because of you, when I brandish my sword before them; they shall tremble every moment, every one for his own life, on the day of your downfall.


You shall eat the flesh of the mighty, and drink the blood of the princes of the earth—of rams, of lambs, and of goats, of bulls, all of them fatlings of Bashan.


Nineveh is like a pool whose waters run away. “Halt! Halt!” they cry; but none turns back.


Plunder the silver, plunder the gold! There is no end of treasure, or wealth of every precious thing.


The great day of the Lord is near, near and hastening fast; the sound of the day of the Lord is bitter, the mighty man cries aloud there.
