But Joseph said to them, “It is as I said to you, you are spies.


Send one of you, and let him bring your brother, while you remain in prison, that your words may be tested, whether there is truth in you; or else, by the life of Pharaoh, surely you are spies.”


and bring your youngest brother to me; so your words will be verified, and you shall not die.” And they did so.


“The man, the lord of the land, spoke roughly to us, and took us to be spies of the land.


Bring your youngest brother to me; then I shall know that you are not spies but honest men, and I will deliver to you your brother, and you shall trade in the land.’ ”


Joseph saw his brothers, and knew them, but he treated them like strangers and spoke roughly to them. “Where do you come from?” he said. They said, “From the land of Canaan, to buy food.”


But Judah said to him, “The man solemnly warned us, saying, ‘You shall not see my face, unless your brother is with you.’


but if you will not send him, we will not go down, for the man said to us, ‘You shall not see my face, unless your brother is with you.’ ”


Though they say, “As the Lord lives,” yet they swear falsely.


“How can I pardon you? Your children have forsaken me, and have sworn by those who are no gods. When I fed them to the full, they committed adultery and trooped to the houses of harlots.


You shall fear the Lord your God; you shall serve him, and swear by his name.


But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath, but let your yes be yes and your no be no, that you may not fall under condemnation.


And she said, “Oh, my lord! As you live, my lord, I am the woman who was standing here in your presence, praying to the Lord.


When Saul saw David go forth against the Philistine, he said to Abner, the commander of the army, “Abner, whose son is this youth?” And Abner said, “As your soul lives, O king, I cannot tell.”


But David replied, “Your father knows well that I have found favor in your eyes; and he thinks, ‘Let not Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved.’ But truly, as the Lord lives and as your soul lives, there is but a step between me and death.”
