Jacob said, “No, I pray you, if I have found favor in your sight, then accept my present from my hand; for truly to see your face is like seeing the face of God, with such favor have you received me.


Esau said, “What do you mean by all this company which I met?” Jacob answered, “To find favor in the sight of my lord.”


Now Joseph was governor over the land; he it was who sold to all the people of the land. And Joseph's brothers came, and bowed themselves before him with their faces to the ground.


Then their father Israel said to them, “If it must be so, then do this: take some of the choice fruits of the land in your bags, and carry down to the man a present, a little balm and a little honey, gum, myrrh, pistachio nuts, and almonds.


When Joseph came home, they brought into the house to him the present which they had with them, and bowed down to him to the ground.


So in the lowest parts of the space behind the wall, in open places, I stationed the people according to their families, with their swords, their spears, and their bows.


A bribe is like a magic stone in the eyes of him who gives it; wherever he turns he prospers.


A man's gift makes room for him and brings him before great men.


Many seek the favor of a generous man, and every one is a friend to a man who gives gifts.


A gift in secret averts anger; and a bribe in the bosom, strong wrath.


And now let this present which your servant has brought to my lord be given to the young men who follow my lord.


Ask your young men, and they will tell you. Therefore let my young men find favor in your eyes; for we come on a feast day. Pray, give whatever you have at hand to your servants and to your son David.’ ”
