All the offspring of Jacob were seventy persons; Joseph was already in Egypt.


And the Lord came down upon Mount Sinai, to the top of the mountain; and the Lord called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up.


And the Lord said to him, “Go down, and come up bringing Aaron with you; but do not let the priests and the people break through to come up to the Lord, lest he break out against them.”


And the Lord said to Moses. “Lo, I am coming to you in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with you, and may also believe you for ever.” Then Moses told the words of the people to the Lord.


And the people stood afar off, while Moses drew near to the thick darkness where God was.


Then Moses went up on the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain.


Moses alone shall come near to the Lord; but the others shall not come near, and the people shall not come up with him.”


Then Moses and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel went up,


“Then bring near to you Aaron your brother, and his sons with him, from among the people of Israel, to serve me as priests—Aaron and Aaron's sons, Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.


Then he said, “Do not come near; put off your shoes from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.”


Be ready in the morning, and come up in the morning to Mount Sinai, and present yourself there to me on the top of the mountain.


Aaron took to wife Elisheba, the daughter of Amminadab and the sister of Nahshon; and she bore him Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.


And before them stood seventy men of the elders of the house of Israel, with Ja-azaniah the son of Shaphan standing among them. Each had his censer in his hand, and the smoke of the cloud of incense went up.


And the Lord said to Moses, “Gather for me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people and officers over them; and bring them to the tent of meeting, and let them take their stand there with you.


After this the Lord appointed seventy others, and sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to come.


The seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!”


So I took the heads of your tribes, wise and experienced men, and set them as heads over you, commanders of thousands, commanders of hundreds, commanders of fifties, commanders of tens, and officers, throughout your tribes.
