Deuteronomy 9:5 - Revised Standard Version (RSV-CI)

5 Not because of your righteousness or the uprightness of your heart are you going in to possess their land; but because of the wickedness of these nations the Lord your God is driving them out from before you, and that he may confirm the word which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

Then the Lord appeared to Abram, and said, “To your descendants I will give this land.” So he built there an altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him.


for all the land which you see I will give to you and to your descendants for ever.


And they shall come back here in the fourth generation; for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.”


And he said to him, “I am the Lord who brought you from Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to possess.”


And I will give to you, and to your descendants after you, the land of your sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.”


So it was that, when God destroyed the cities of the valley, God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in which Lot dwelt.


I will multiply your descendants as the stars of heaven, and will give to your descendants all these lands; and by your descendants all the nations of the earth shall bless themselves:


And behold, the Lord stood above it and said, “I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and to your descendants;


Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, thy servants, to whom thou didst swear by thine own self, and didst say to them, ‘I will multiply your descendants as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have promised I will give to your descendants, and they shall inherit it for ever.’ ”


But I acted for the sake of my name, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations, in whose sight I had brought them out.


“Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord God: It is not for your sake, O house of Israel, that I am about to act, but for the sake of my holy name, which you have profaned among the nations to which you came.


It is not for your sake that I will act, says the Lord God; let that be known to you. Be ashamed and confounded for your ways, O house of Israel.


“Do not defile yourselves by any of these things, for by all these the nations I am casting out before you defiled themselves;


and the land became defiled, so that I punished its iniquity, and the land vomited out its inhabitants.


Thou wilt show faithfulness to Jacob and steadfast love to Abraham, as thou hast sworn to our fathers from the days of old.


You are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant which God gave to your fathers, saying to Abraham, ‘And in your posterity shall all the families of the earth be blessed.’


As regards the gospel they are enemies of God, for your sake; but as regards election they are beloved for the sake of their forefathers.


For I tell you that Christ became a servant to the circumcised to show God's truthfulness, in order to confirm the promises given to the patriarchs,


Behold, I have set the land before you; go in and take possession of the land which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give to them and to their descendants after them.’


You shall not do so to the Lord your God; for every abominable thing which the Lord hates they have done for their gods; for they even burn their sons and their daughters in the fire to their gods.


For whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord; and because of these abominable practices the Lord your God is driving them out before you.


“When you come into the land which the Lord your God gives you, you shall not learn to follow the abominable practices of those nations.


that they may not teach you to do according to all their abominable practices which they have done in the service of their gods, and so to sin against the Lord your God.


he saved us, not because of deeds done by us in righteousness, but in virtue of his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal in the Holy Spirit,
