When Israel grew strong, they put the Canaanites to forced labor, but did not utterly drive them out.


“That the leaders took the lead in Israel, that the people offered themselves willingly, bless the Lord!

For as the Lord lives who saves Israel, though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die.” But there was not a man among all the people that answered him.


Then Saul said, “Thus shall you say to David, ‘The king desires no marriage present except a hundred foreskins of the Philistines, that he may be avenged of the king's enemies.’ ” Now Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines.
