For why? the way of godly men unto the Lord is known: Whereas the way of wicked men shall quite be overthrown.


O Lord, unto my pray'r give ear, my cry let come to thee;


My heart within me smitten is, and it is withered Like very grass; so that I do forget to eat my bread.


The proud for me a snare have hid, and cords; yea, they a net Have by the way-side for me spread; they gins for me have set.


Lord, keep me safely from the snares which they for me prepare; And from the subtile gins of them that wicked workers are.


My sp'rit is therefore overwhelm'd in me perplexedly; Within me is my very heart amazed wondrously.


Thou prov'dst mine heart, thou visit'dst me by night, thou didst me try, Yet nothing found'st; for that my mouth shall not sin, purpos'd I.


Like water I'm pour'd out, my bones all out of joint do part: Amidst my bowels, as the wax, so melted is my heart.


And sith thou art my strength, therefore pull me out of the net, Which they in subtilty for me so privily have set.


They meet, they lurk, they mark my steps, waiting my soul to kill.


From th' utmost corner of the land my cry to thee I'll send. What time my heart is overwhelm'd, and in perplexity, Do thou me lead unto the Rock that higher is than I.


Surely mean men are vanity, and great men are a lie; In balance laid, they wholly are more light than vanity.


I to remembrance God did call, yet trouble did remain; And overwhelm'd my spirit was, whilst I did sore complain.
