The Lord of hosts has planned it— to defile the pride of all glory, to shame all the honored of the earth.


Woe to the proud garland of the drunkards of Ephraim and the fading flower of its glorious beauty, at the head of the fertile valley, those overcome with wine!


The word of the Lord that came to the prophet Jeremiah concerning the Philistines, before Pharaoh attacked Gaza:


Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven, for all his works are truth, and his ways are justice; he is able to bring low those who walk in pride.


I will cut off the inhabitants from Ashdod and the one who holds the scepter from Ashkelon; I will turn my hand against Ekron, and the remnant of the Philistines shall perish, says the Lord God.


This shall be their lot in return for their pride, because they scoffed and boasted against the people of the Lord of hosts.


For Gaza shall be deserted, and Ashkelon shall become a desolation; Ashdod’s people shall be driven out at noon, and Ekron shall be uprooted.


Ashkelon shall see it and be afraid; Gaza, too, and shall writhe in anguish; Ekron also, because its hopes are withered. The king shall perish from Gaza; Ashkelon shall be uninhabited;


I will take away its blood from its mouth and its abominations from between its teeth; it, too, shall be a remnant for our God; it shall be like a clan in Judah, and Ekron shall be like the Jebusites.


In the same way, you who are younger must be subject to the elders. And all of you must clothe yourselves with humility in your dealings with one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
