Jeroboam appointed a festival on the fifteenth day of the eighth month like the festival that was in Judah, and he offered sacrifices on the altar; so he did in Bethel, sacrificing to the calves that he had made. And he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places that he had made.


But to the wicked God says, “What right have you to recite my statutes or take my covenant on your lips?


Why do you boast, O mighty one, of mischief done against the godly? All day long


No, in your hearts you devise wrongs; your hands deal out violence on earth.


God has taken his place in the divine council; in the midst of the gods he holds judgment:


When one will not listen to the law, even one’s prayers are an abomination.


Moreover, I saw under the sun that, in the place of justice, wickedness was there, and in the place of righteousness, wickedness was there as well.


If you see in a province the oppression of the poor and the violation of justice and right, do not be amazed at the matter, for the high official is watched by a higher, and there are yet higher ones over them.


Woe to those who make iniquitous decrees, who write oppressive statutes,


you who put far away the evil day and bring near a reign of violence?


For you have kept the statutes of Omri and all the works of the house of Ahab, and you have followed their counsels. Therefore I will make you a desolation and your inhabitants an object of hissing, so you shall bear the scorn of my people.


Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that anyone who knew where Jesus was should let them know, so that they might arrest him.


Then they took Jesus from Caiaphas to Pilate’s headquarters. It was early in the morning. They themselves did not enter the headquarters, so as to avoid ritual defilement and to be able to eat the Passover.


His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that anyone who confessed Jesus to be the Messiah would be put out of the synagogue.


Saul said, “Listen now, son of Ahitub.” He answered, “Here I am, my lord.”
