Surely everyone goes about like a shadow. Surely for nothing they are in turmoil; they heap up and do not know who will gather.


But know that the Lord has set apart the faithful for himself; the Lord hears when I call to him.


those who trust in their wealth and boast of the abundance of their riches?


“See the one who would not take refuge in God but trusted in abundant riches and sought refuge in wealth!”


Those who love me, I will deliver; I will protect those who know my name.


When your eyes light upon it, it is gone, for suddenly it takes wings to itself, flying like an eagle toward heaven.


Because you have said, “We have made a covenant with death, and with Sheol we have an agreement; when the overwhelming scourge passes through it will not come to us, for we have made lies our refuge, and in falsehood we have taken shelter”;


Therefore thus says the Holy One of Israel: Because you reject this word and put your trust in oppression and deceit and rely on them,


Even the nations are like a drop from a bucket and are accounted as dust on the scales; see, he takes up the isles like fine dust.


All the nations are as nothing before him; they are accounted by him as less than nothing and emptiness.


You felt secure in your wickedness; you said, “No one sees me.” Your wisdom and your knowledge led you astray, and you said in your heart, “I am, and there is no one besides me.”


No one brings suit justly; no one goes to law honestly; they rely on empty pleas; they speak lies, conceiving mischief and bearing iniquity.


For I, the Lord, love justice, I hate robbery and wrongdoing; I will faithfully give them their recompense, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them.


This is your lot, the portion I have measured out to you, says the Lord, because you have forgotten me and trusted in lies.


Like the partridge hatching what it did not lay, so are all who amass wealth unjustly; in midlife it will leave them, and at their end they will prove to be fools.


Then Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!”


For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and in their eagerness to be rich some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pains.


As for those who in the present age are rich, command them not to be haughty or to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches but rather on God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.
