Let me bring a little bread, that you may refresh yourselves, and after that you may pass on—since you have come to your servant.” So they said, “Do as you have said.”


Then Absalom commanded his servants, “Watch when Amnon’s heart is merry with wine, and when I say to you, ‘Strike Amnon,’ then kill him. Do not be afraid; have I not myself commanded you? Be courageous and valiant.”


When he summoned famine against the land and cut off every supply of bread,


You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.


But you have exalted my horn like that of the wild ox; you have anointed me with fresh oil.


Give strong drink to one who is perishing and wine to those in bitter distress;


let them drink and forget their poverty and remember their misery no more.


Feasts are made for laughter, wine gladdens life, and money meets every need.


Who is like the wise man? And who knows the interpretation of a thing? Being wise makes one’s face shine, but arrogance changes one’s face.


Go, eat your bread with enjoyment and drink your wine with a merry heart, for God has long ago approved what you do.


For now the Sovereign, the Lord of hosts, is taking away from Jerusalem and from Judah support and staff— all support of bread and all support of water—


For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there until they have watered the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,


They shall come and sing aloud on the height of Zion, and they shall be radiant over the goodness of the Lord, over the grain, the wine, and the oil, and over the young of the flock and the herd; their life shall become like a watered garden, and they shall never languish again.


Mortal, when a land sins against me by acting faithlessly and I stretch out my hand against it and cut off its supply of bread and send famine upon it and cut off from it humans and animals,


Then he said to me, “Mortal, I am going to cut off the supply of bread in Jerusalem; they shall eat bread by weight and with fearfulness, and they shall drink water by measure and in dismay.


when I loose against you my deadly arrows of famine, arrows for destruction, which I will let loose to destroy you, and when I bring more and more famine upon you and cut off your supply of bread.


When I cut off your supply of bread, ten women shall bake your bread in a single oven, and they shall dole out your bread by weight, and though you eat, you shall not be satisfied.


Then the people of Ephraim shall become like warriors, and their hearts shall be glad as with wine. Their children shall see it and rejoice; their hearts shall exult in the Lord.


Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he gave it to them, and all of them drank from it.


You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment.


Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit,


You shall have olive trees throughout all your territory, but you shall not anoint yourself with the oil, for your olives shall drop off.


He humbled you by letting you hunger, then by feeding you with manna, with which neither you nor your ancestors were acquainted, in order to make you understand that one does not live by bread alone but by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.


You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions.”


But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and all of you have knowledge.


On the fourth day they got up early in the morning, and he prepared to go, but the young woman’s father said to his son-in-law, “Fortify yourself with a bit of food, and after that you may go.”


But the vine said to them, ‘Shall I stop producing my wine that cheers gods and mortals and go to sway over the trees?’


The olive tree answered them, ‘Shall I stop producing my rich oil by which gods and mortals are honored and go to sway over the trees?’
