They replied, “The remnant there in the province who escaped captivity are in great trouble and shame; the wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been destroyed by fire.”

And Shallum son of Col-hozeh, ruler of the district of Mizpah, repaired the Fountain Gate; he rebuilt it and covered it and set up its doors, its bolts, and its bars, and he built the wall of the Pool of Shelah of the King’s Garden, as far as the stairs that go down from the city of David.


The nations will fear the name of the Lord and all the kings of the earth your glory.


You have made us the taunt of our neighbors, the derision and scorn of those around us.


You have made us a byword among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples.


Return sevenfold into the bosom of our neighbors the taunts with which they taunted you, O Lord!


We have become a taunt to our neighbors, mocked and derided by those around us.


I will make them a horror, an evil thing, to all the kingdoms of the earth—a disgrace, a byword, a taunt, and a curse in all the places where I shall drive them.


The Lord has destroyed without mercy all the dwellings of Jacob; in his wrath he has broken down the strongholds of daughter Judah; he has brought down to the ground in dishonor the kingdom and its rulers.


My eyes cause me grief at the fate of all the young women in my city.


Moreover, I will make you a desolation and an object of mocking among the nations around you, in the sight of all who pass by.


A day for the building of your walls! On that day the boundary shall be far extended.


But Nahash the Ammonite said to them, “On this condition I will make a treaty with you, namely, that I gouge out everyone’s right eye and thus put disgrace upon all Israel.”
