And when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left, your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.”

Thus says the Lord: Stand at the crossroads and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way lies; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls. But they said, “We will not walk in it.”


So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”


For many are called, but few are chosen.”


“Enter through the narrow gate, for the gate is wide and the road is easy that leads to destruction, and there are many who take it.


“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.


He called the crowd with his disciples and said to them, “If any wish to come after me, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.


“Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.


They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, an hour is coming when those who kill you will think that by doing so they are offering worship to God.


I have said this to you so that in me you may have peace. In the world you face persecution, but take courage: I have conquered the world!”


There they strengthened the souls of the disciples and encouraged them to continue in the faith, saying, “It is through many persecutions that we must enter the kingdom of God.”


Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of the mind, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect.


Why not? Because they did not strive for it on the basis of faith but as if it were based on works. They have stumbled over the stumbling stone,
