Joseph commanded the physicians in his service to embalm his father. So the physicians embalmed Israel;


They buried him in the tomb that he had cut out for himself in the city of David. They laid him on a bier that had been filled with various kinds of spices prepared by the perfumer’s art, and they made a very great fire in his honor.


While he was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at the table, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very costly ointment of nard, and she broke open the jar and poured the ointment on his head.


She has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand for its burial.


There were also women looking on from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome,


When evening had come, and since it was the day of Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath,


Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where the body was laid.


And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb.


So they went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and amazement had seized them, and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid. [[And all that had been commanded them they told briefly to those around Peter. And afterward Jesus himself sent out through them, from east to west, the sacred and imperishable proclamation of eternal salvation. Amen.]] [[


It was the day of Preparation, and the Sabbath was beginning.


Then they returned and prepared spices and ointments. On the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.


But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices that they had prepared.


And that is what the soldiers did. Meanwhile, standing near the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.


Since it was the day of Preparation, the Jews did not want the bodies left on the cross during the Sabbath, especially because that Sabbath was a day of great solemnity. So they asked Pilate to have the legs of the crucified men broken and the bodies removed.
