Do not turn my heart to any evil, to busy myself with wicked deeds in company with those who work iniquity; do not let me eat of their delicacies.


Though in their lifetime they count themselves happy —for you are praised when you do well for yourself—


No, in your hearts you devise wrongs; your hands deal out violence on earth.


Such are the wicked; always at ease, they increase in riches.


For I was envious of the arrogant; I saw the prosperity of the wicked.


They tested God in their heart by demanding the food they craved.


They tested God again and again and provoked the Holy One of Israel.


Yet they tested the Most High God and rebelled against him. They did not observe his decrees


when your ancestors tested me and put me to the proof, though they had seen my work.


The wicked covet the proceeds of wickedness, but the root of the righteous bears fruit.


There is a vanity that takes place on earth, that there are righteous people who are treated according to the conduct of the wicked and wicked people who are treated according to the conduct of the righteous. I said that this also is vanity.

You have wearied the Lord with your words. Yet you say, “How have we wearied him?” By saying, “All who do evil are good in the sight of the Lord, and he delights in them.” Or by asking, “Where is the God of justice?”


See, the day is coming, burning like an oven, when all the arrogant and all evildoers will be stubble; the day that comes shall burn them up, says the Lord of hosts, so that it will leave them neither root nor branch.


On an appointed day Herod put on his royal robes, took his seat on the platform, and delivered a public address to them.


Then Peter said to her, “How is it that you have agreed together to put the Spirit of the Lord to the test? Look, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.”


We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did, and were destroyed by serpents.

In the same way, you who are younger must be subject to the elders. And all of you must clothe yourselves with humility in your dealings with one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
