Happy are those who consider the poor; the Lord delivers them in the day of trouble.


Those who oppress the poor insult their Maker, but those who are kind to the needy honor him.


By loyalty and faithfulness iniquity is atoned for, and by the fear of the Lord one avoids evil.


Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord and will be repaid in full.


Therefore, O king, may my counsel be acceptable to you: atone for your sins with righteousness and your iniquities with mercy to the oppressed, so that your prosperity may be prolonged.”


For you always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me.


Give to the one who asks of you, and do not refuse anyone who wants to borrow from you.


since it enters not the heart but the stomach and goes out into the sewer?” (Thus he declared all foods clean.)


Sell your possessions and give alms. Make purses for yourselves that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.

The voice said to him again, a second time, “What God has made clean, you must not call profane.”


The disciples determined that, according to their ability, each would send relief to the brothers and sisters living in Judea;


Now after some years I came to bring alms to my people and to offer sacrifices.


For if the eagerness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what one does not have.


Those who steal must give up stealing; rather, let them labor, doing good work with their own hands, so as to have something to share with the needy.


To the pure all things are pure, but to the corrupt and unbelieving nothing is pure; their very minds and consciences are corrupted.


Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.


For God is not unjust; he will not overlook your work and the love that you showed for his sake in serving the saints, as you still do.


Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself unstained by the world.
