I gave my back to those who struck me and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard; I did not hide my face from insult and spitting.


They have gaped at me with their mouths; they have struck me insolently on the cheek; they mass themselves together against me.


Then they spat in his face and struck him, and some slapped him,


But I say to you: Do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also,


For you put up with it when someone makes slaves of you or preys upon you or takes advantage of you or puts on airs or gives you a slap in the face.


If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt.


Now you are walled around with a wall; siege is laid against us; with a rod they strike the ruler of Israel upon the cheek.


Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy upon us, for we have had more than enough of contempt.


Insults have broken my heart, so that I am in despair. I looked for pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none.


It is zeal for your house that has consumed me; the insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.


They abhor me; they keep aloof from me; they do not hesitate to spit at the sight of me.
