But you, O Bethlehem of Ephrathah, who are one of the little clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to rule in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient days.


In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, magi from the east came to Jerusalem,


and Kattath, Nahalal, Shimron, Idalah, and Bethlehem—twelve towns with their villages.


After Abimelech, Tola son of Puah son of Dodo, a man of Issachar, who lived at Shamir in the hill country of Ephraim, rose to deliver Israel.


Jephthah judged Israel six years. Then Jephthah the Gileadite died and was buried in his town in Gilead.


He had thirty sons. He gave his thirty daughters in marriage outside his clan and brought in thirty young women from outside for his sons. He judged Israel seven years.


Now there was a young man of Bethlehem in Judah, of the clan of Judah. He was a Levite residing there.


In those days, when there was no king in Israel, a certain Levite residing in the remote parts of the hill country of Ephraim took to himself a concubine from Bethlehem in Judah.


The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you grieve over Saul? I have rejected him from being king over Israel. Fill your horn with oil and set out; I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.”
