So couriers went throughout all Israel and Judah with letters from the king and his officials, as the king had commanded, saying, “O people of Israel, return to the Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, so that he may turn again to the remnant of you who have escaped from the hand of the kings of Assyria.


So the couriers, mounted on their royal steeds, hurried out, urged by the king’s command. The decree was issued in the citadel of Susa.


“A mortal, born of woman, few of days and full of trouble,


“You chastise mortals in punishment for sin, consuming like a moth what is dear to them; surely everyone is a mere breath. Selah


You have made my days a few handbreadths, and my lifetime is as nothing in your sight. Surely everyone stands as a mere breath. Selah


There are many who say, “O that we might see some good! Let the light of your face shine on us, O Lord!”


Remember how short my time is— for what vanity you have created all mortals!


Yet you do not even know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.
