But she said, “As the Lord your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of meal in a jar and a little oil in a jug; I am now gathering a couple of sticks so that I may go home and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it and die.”


and say: Thus says the king: Put this fellow in prison, and feed him on reduced rations of bread and water until I come in peace.”


For my sighing comes like my bread, and my groanings are poured out like water.


so that their lives loathe bread and their appetites dainty food.


Can that which is tasteless be eaten without salt, or is there any flavor in the juice of mallows?


“O that I might have my request and that God would grant my desire,


Indeed, I eat ashes like bread and mingle tears with my drink,


Then I said, “Ah Lord God! I have never defiled myself; from my youth up until now I have never eaten what died of itself or was torn by animals, nor has carrion flesh come into my mouth.”


Then he said to me, “Mortal, I am going to cut off the supply of bread in Jerusalem; they shall eat bread by weight and with fearfulness, and they shall drink water by measure and in dismay.


I had eaten no rich food, no meat or wine had entered my mouth, and I had not anointed myself at all, for the full three weeks.
