Then Asa was angry with the seer and put him in the stocks, in prison, for he was in a rage with him because of this. And Asa inflicted cruelties on some of the people at the same time.


In the thirty-ninth year of his reign Asa was diseased in his feet, and his disease became severe; yet even in his disease he did not seek the Lord but sought help from physicians.


Their bodies, once full of youth, will lie down in the dust with them.


I broke the fangs of the unrighteous and made them drop their prey from their teeth.


The night racks my bones, and the pain that gnaws me takes no rest.


When I lie down I say, ‘When shall I rise?’ But the night is long, and I am full of tossing until dawn.


Before I was humbled I went astray, but now I keep your word.


It is good for me that I was humbled, so that I might learn your statutes.


For all day long I have been plagued and am punished every morning.


Happy are those whom you discipline, O Lord, and whom you teach out of your law,


For every matter has its time and way, although the troubles of mortals lie heavy upon them.


Therefore by this the guilt of Jacob will be expiated, and this will be the full fruit of the removal of his sin: when he makes all the stones of the altars like chalkstones crushed to pieces; no sacred poles or incense altars will remain standing.


But when we are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined so that we may not be condemned along with the world.


Know, then, in your heart that, as a parent disciplines a child, so the Lord your God disciplines you.


I reprove and discipline those whom I love. Be earnest, therefore, and repent.
