God spoke to Israel in visions of the night and said, “Jacob, Jacob.” And he said, “Here I am.”


The Lord spoke to Manasseh and to his people, but they gave no heed.


“God indeed does all these things, twice, three times, with mortals,


Amid thoughts from visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on mortals,


I have spoken once, and I will not answer, twice but will proceed no further.”


Once God has spoken; twice have I heard this: that power belongs to God,


and steadfast love belongs to you, O Lord. For you repay to all according to their work.


Because I have called and you refused, have stretched out my hand and no one heeded,


Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the Lord,


And he said, “Go and say to this people: ‘Keep listening, but do not comprehend; keep looking, but do not understand.’


In the first year of King Belshazzar of Babylon, Daniel had a dream and visions of his head as he lay in bed. Then he wrote down the dream:


With them indeed is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah that says: ‘You will indeed listen but never understand, and you will indeed look but never perceive.


Then he said to them, “Oh, how foolish you are and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have declared!


And this is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil.
