“Since I exalted you out of the dust and made you leader over my people Israel, and you have walked in the way of Jeroboam and have caused my people Israel to sin, provoking me to anger with their sins,


Those who choose another god multiply their sorrows; their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out or take their names upon my lips.


For Jerusalem has stumbled, and Judah has fallen, because their speech and their deeds are against the Lord, defying his glorious presence.


Among the smooth stones of the valley is your portion; it is they who are your lot; to them you have poured out a drink offering; you have brought a grain offering. Should these acts cause me to relent?


But you who forsake the Lord, who forget my holy mountain, who set a table for Fortune and fill cups of mixed wine for Destiny,


a people who provoke me to my face continually, sacrificing in gardens and offering incense on bricks;


And I will utter my judgments against them for all their wickedness in forsaking me; they have made offerings to other gods and worshiped the works of their own hands.


The Lord of hosts, who planted you, has pronounced evil against you because of the evil that the house of Israel and the house of Judah have done, provoking me to anger by making offerings to Baal.


while their children remember their altars and their sacred poles beside every green tree and on the high hills,


And the houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah shall be defiled like the place of Topheth—all the houses upon whose roofs offerings have been made to the whole host of heaven and libations have been poured out to other gods.


Yet you did not listen to me, says the Lord, and so you have provoked me to anger with the work of your hands to your own harm.


The Chaldeans who are fighting against this city shall come, set this city on fire, and burn it, with the houses on whose roofs offerings have been made to Baal and libations have been poured out to other gods, to provoke me to anger.


Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: You and your wives have accomplished in deeds what you declared in words, saying, ‘We are determined to perform the vows that we have made, to make offerings to the queen of heaven and to pour out libations to her.’ By all means, keep your vows and make your libations!


Yet I persistently sent to you all my servants the prophets, saying, “I beg you not to do this abominable thing that I hate!”


Do you not see what they are doing in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?


Young men are compelled to grind, and boys stagger under loads of wood.


You prostituted yourself with the Egyptians, your lustful neighbors, multiplying your prostitution, to provoke me to anger.


For when I had brought them into the land that I swore to give them, then wherever they saw any high hill or any leafy tree, there they offered their sacrifices and presented the provocation of their offering; there they sent up their pleasing odors, and there they poured out their drink offerings.


And he brought me into the inner court of the house of the Lord; there, at the entrance of the temple of the Lord, between the porch and the altar, were about twenty-five men with their backs to the temple of the Lord and their faces toward the east, prostrating themselves to the sun toward the east.


Then he said to me, “Have you seen this, O mortal? Is it not bad enough that the house of Judah commits the abominations done here? Must they fill the land with violence and provoke my anger still further? See, they are putting the branch to their nose!


Or are we provoking the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he?


They made him jealous with strange gods; with abhorrent things they provoked him.


They made me jealous with what is no god, provoked me with their idols. So I will make them jealous with what is no people, provoke them with a foolish nation.


And when you look up to the heavens and see the sun, the moon, and the stars, all the host of heaven, do not be led astray and bow down to them and serve them, things that the Lord your God has allotted to all the peoples everywhere under heaven.
