Even if they bring up children, I will bereave them until no one is left. Woe to them indeed when I depart from them!


When she carried on her prostitutions so openly and flaunted her nakedness, I turned in disgust from her, as I had turned from her sister.


Yet they did not listen or incline their ear; they stiffened their necks and would not hear or receive instruction.


I said, “Surely the city will fear me; it will accept correction; it will not lose sight of all that I have brought upon it.” But they were the more eager to make all their deeds corrupt.


They have turned their backs to me, not their faces; though I have taught them persistently, they would not listen and accept correction.


For you hate discipline, and you cast my words behind you.


For after I had turned away I repented, and after I was discovered, I struck my thigh; I was ashamed, and I was dismayed because I bore the disgrace of my youth.”


I will make Jerusalem a heap of ruins, a lair of jackals, and I will make the towns of Judah a desolation, without inhabitant.


And I will bring to an end the sound of mirth and gladness, the voice of the bride and bridegroom in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, for the land shall become a waste.


Therefore thus says the Lord God: My anger and my wrath shall be poured out on this place, on humans and animals, on the trees of the field and the fruit of the ground; it will burn and not be quenched.


O Jerusalem, wash your heart clean of wickedness so that you may be saved. How long shall your evil schemes lodge within you?


The lions have roared against him; they have roared loudly. They have made his land a waste; his cities are in ruins, without inhabitant.


Keep hold of instruction; do not let go; guard her, for she is your life.


Happy are those whom you discipline, O Lord, and whom you teach out of your law,


Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth.


If they were wise, they would understand this; they would discern what their end would be.


“Then the land shall enjoy its Sabbath years as long as it lies desolate, while you are in the land of your enemies; then the land shall rest and enjoy its Sabbath years.


You shall say to them: This is the nation that did not obey the voice of the Lord their God and did not accept discipline; truth has perished; it is cut off from their lips.


Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom for the future.


For their mother has prostituted herself; she who conceived them has acted shamefully. For she said, “I will go after my lovers; they give me my bread and my water, my wool and my flax, my oil and my drink.”
