Therefore he brought up against them the king of the Chaldeans, who killed their youths with the sword in the house of their sanctuary and had no compassion on young man or young woman, the aged or the feeble; he gave them all into his hand.


He will become a sanctuary, a stone one strikes against; for both houses of Israel he will become a rock one stumbles over, a trap and a snare for the inhabitants of Jerusalem.


And many among them shall stumble; they shall fall and be broken; they shall be snared and taken.”


And I will dash them one against another, parents and children together, says the Lord. I will not pity or spare or have compassion when I destroy them.


Give glory to the Lord your God before he brings darkness and before your feet stumble on the mountains at twilight; while you look for light, he turns it into gloom and makes it deep darkness.


Therefore give their children over to famine; hurl them out to the power of the sword; let their wives become childless and widowed. May their men meet death by pestilence, their youths be slain by the sword in battle.


Yet you, O Lord, know all their plotting to kill me. Do not forgive their iniquity; do not blot out their sin from your sight. Let them be tripped up before you; deal with them while you are angry.


Afterward, says the Lord, I will give King Zedekiah of Judah and his servants and the people in this city—those who survive the pestilence, sword, and famine—into the hands of King Nebuchadrezzar of Babylon, into the hands of their enemies, into the hands of those who seek their lives. He shall strike them down with the edge of the sword; he shall not pity them or spare them or have compassion.


They acted shamefully; they committed abomination, yet they were not at all ashamed; they did not know how to blush. Therefore they shall fall among those who fall; at the time when I punish them, they shall be overthrown, says the Lord.


Again, if the righteous turn from their righteousness and commit iniquity and I lay a stumbling block before them, they shall die; because you have not warned them, they shall die for their sin, and their righteous deeds that they have done shall not be remembered, but their blood I will require at your hand.


Surely, parents shall eat their children in your midst, and children shall eat their parents; I will execute judgments on you, and any of you who survive I will scatter to every wind.


They shall stumble over one another, as if to escape a sword, though no one pursues, and you shall have no power to stand against your enemies.


And David says, “Let their table become a snare and a trap, a stumbling block and a retribution for them;


as it is written, “See, I am laying in Zion a stone that will make people stumble, a rock that will make them fall, and whoever trusts in him will not be put to shame.”


and “A stone that makes them stumble and a rock that makes them fall.” They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.
