Is a trumpet blown in a city, and the people are not afraid? Does disaster befall a city unless the Lord has done it?


Although he may flourish among rushes, the east wind shall come, a blast from the Lord, rising from the wilderness, and his fountain shall dry up; his spring shall be parched. It shall strip his treasury of every precious thing.


He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?”


For thus said the Lord of hosts after his glory sent me to the nations who plundered you: Truly, one who touches you touches the apple of my eye.


But it was plucked up in fury, cast down to the ground; the east wind dried it up; its fruit was stripped off; its strong stem was withered; the fire consumed it.


Thus says the Lord of hosts: The people of Israel are oppressed, and so also are the people of Judah; all their captors have held them fast and refuse to let them go.


Summon archers against Babylon, all who bend the bow. Encamp all around her; let no one escape. Repay her according to her deeds; just as she has done, do to her—for she has arrogantly defied the Lord, the Holy One of Israel.


I set a snare for you, and you were caught, O Babylon, but you did not know it; you were discovered and seized because you challenged the Lord.


Go up to the land of Merathaim; go up against her, and attack the inhabitants of Pekod and utterly destroy the last of them, says the Lord; do all that I have commanded you.


For I am going to stir up and bring against Babylon a company of great nations from the land of the north, and they shall array themselves against her; from there she shall be taken. Their arrows are like the arrows of a skilled warrior who does not return empty-handed.


and I will bring upon Elam the four winds from the four quarters of heaven, and I will scatter them to all these winds, and there shall be no nation to which the exiles from Elam shall not come.


I myself will put a spirit in him so that he shall hear a rumor and return to his own land; I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.”


O daughter Babylon, you devastator! Happy shall they be who pay you back what you have done to us!


Look, the storm of the Lord! Wrath has gone forth, a whirling tempest; it will burst upon the head of the wicked.


Therefore I will make the heavens tremble, and the earth will be shaken out of its place at the wrath of the Lord of hosts in the day of his fierce anger.


I will ascend to the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.”


The oracle concerning the wilderness of the sea. As whirlwinds in the Negeb sweep on, it comes from the desert, from a terrible land.


Come down and sit in the dust, virgin daughter Babylon! Sit on the ground without a throne, daughter Chaldea! For you shall no more be called tender and delicate.


Though Babylon should mount up to heaven, and though she should fortify her strong height, from me destroyers would come upon her, says the Lord.


Jeremiah wrote in a scroll all the disasters that would come on Babylon, all these words that are written concerning Babylon.
