In his days Pharaoh Neco king of Egypt went up to the king of Assyria to the River Euphrates. King Josiah went to meet him, but when Pharaoh Neco met him at Megiddo, he killed him.


The king of Egypt did not come again out of his land, for the king of Babylon had taken over all that belonged to the king of Egypt from the Wadi of Egypt to the River Euphrates.


When evildoers assail me to devour my flesh— my adversaries and foes— they shall stumble and fall.


Again I saw that under the sun the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the intelligent, nor favor to the skillful, but time and chance happen to them all.


And many among them shall stumble; they shall fall and be broken; they shall be snared and taken.”


Then the Lord said to me: “Out of the north disaster shall break out on all the inhabitants of the land.


But the Lord is with me like a terrifying warrior; therefore my persecutors will stumble, and they will not prevail. They will be greatly shamed, for they will not succeed. Their eternal dishonor will never be forgotten.


I am going to send for all the tribes of the north, says the Lord, even for King Nebuchadrezzar of Babylon, my servant, and I will bring them against this land and its inhabitants and against all these nations around; I will utterly destroy them and make them an object of horror and of hissing and an everlasting disgrace.


Raise a standard toward Zion; flee for safety; do not delay, for I am bringing evil from the north and a great destruction.


That day is the day of the Lord God of hosts, a day of retribution, to gain vindication from his foes. The sword shall devour and be sated and drink its fill of their blood. For the Lord God of hosts holds a sacrifice in the land of the north by the River Euphrates.


The nations have heard of your shame, and the earth is full of your cry, for warrior has stumbled against warrior; both have fallen together.


Your multitude stumbled and fell, and one said to another, “Come, let us go back to our own people and to the land of our birth, because of the destroying sword.”


The arrogant one shall stumble and fall, with no one to raise him up, and I will kindle a fire in his cities, and it will devour everything around him.


Flee for safety, O children of Benjamin, from the midst of Jerusalem! Blow the trumpet in Tekoa, and raise a signal on Beth-haccherem, for evil looms out of the north and great destruction.


Then he shall turn back toward the fortresses of his own land, but he shall stumble and fall and shall not be found.


Armies shall be utterly swept away and broken before him, and the prince of the covenant as well.
