Then the Lord said to me: “Out of the north disaster shall break out on all the inhabitants of the land.


I am going to send for all the tribes of the north, says the Lord, even for King Nebuchadrezzar of Babylon, my servant, and I will bring them against this land and its inhabitants and against all these nations around; I will utterly destroy them and make them an object of horror and of hissing and an everlasting disgrace.


That day is the day of the Lord God of hosts, a day of retribution, to gain vindication from his foes. The sword shall devour and be sated and drink its fill of their blood. For the Lord God of hosts holds a sacrifice in the land of the north by the River Euphrates.


Daughter Egypt shall be put to shame; she shall be handed over to a people from the north.


The swift cannot flee away, nor can the warrior escape; in the north by the River Euphrates they have stumbled and fallen.


Thus says the Lord: See, waters are rising out of the north and shall become an overflowing torrent; they shall overflow the land and all that fills it, the city and those who live in it. People shall cry out, and all the inhabitants of the land shall wail.


Though you rejoice, though you exult, O plunderers of my heritage, though you frisk about like a heifer on the grass and neigh like stallions,


Ephraim was a trained heifer that loved to thresh, and I spared her fair neck, but I will make Ephraim break the ground; Judah must plow; Jacob must harrow for himself.
