There was nothing in the ark except the two tablets of stone that Moses had placed there at Horeb, where the Lord made a covenant with the Israelites when they came out of the land of Egypt.


Nevertheless, I am continually with you; you hold my right hand.


Their heart was not steadfast toward him; they were not true to his covenant.


Now, therefore, if you obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession out of all the peoples. Indeed, the whole earth is mine,

Who is that coming up from the wilderness, leaning upon her beloved? Under the apple tree I awakened you. There your mother was in labor with you; there she who bore you was in labor.


The earth lies polluted under its inhabitants, for they have transgressed laws, violated the statutes, broken the everlasting covenant.


For I, the Lord your God, hold your right hand; it is I who say to you, “Do not fear, I will help you.”


For your Maker is your husband; the Lord of hosts is his name; the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer; the God of the whole earth he is called.


You shall say to them, Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Cursed be anyone who does not heed the words of this covenant,


which I commanded your ancestors when I brought them out of the land of Egypt, from the iron smelter, saying, ‘Listen to my voice, and do all that I command you. So shall you be my people, and I will be your God,


Go and proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem, Thus says the Lord: I remember the devotion of your youth, your love as a bride, how you followed me in the wilderness, in a land not sown.


And they will answer, “Because they abandoned the covenant of the Lord their God and worshiped other gods and served them.”


Return, O faithless children, says the Lord, for I am your husband; I will take you, one from a city and two from a family, and I will bring you to Zion.


At that time, says the Lord, I will be the God of all the families of Israel, and they shall be my people.


Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: I myself made a covenant with your ancestors when I brought them out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, saying,


“Every seventh year each of you must set free any Hebrews who have been sold to you and have served you six years; you must set them free from your service.” But your ancestors did not listen to me or incline their ears to me.


I passed by you again and looked on you; you were at the age for love. I spread the edge of my cloak over you and covered your nakedness: I pledged myself to you and entered into a covenant with you, says the Lord God, and you became mine.


I will make you pass under the staff and will bring you within the bond of the covenant.


Oholah was the name of the older and Oholibah the name of her sister. They became mine, and they bore sons and daughters. As for their names, Oholah is Samaria, and Oholibah is Jerusalem.


When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son.


Plead with your mother, plead— for she is not my wife, and I am not her husband— that she put away her prostitution from her face and her adultery from between her breasts,

These are the words of the covenant that the Lord commanded Moses to make with the Israelites in the land of Moab, in addition to the covenant that he had made with them at Horeb.


The Lord will single them out from all the tribes of Israel for calamity, in accordance with all the curses of the covenant written in this book of the law.


they and indeed all the nations will wonder, ‘Why has the Lord done thus to this land? What caused this great display of anger?’


The Lord said to Moses, “Soon you will lie down with your ancestors. Then this people will begin to prostitute themselves to the foreign gods in their midst, the gods of the land into which they are going; they will forsake me, breaking my covenant that I have made with them.


For when I have brought them into the land flowing with milk and honey, which I promised on oath to their ancestors, and they have eaten their fill and grown fat, they will turn to other gods and serve them, despising me and breaking my covenant.


The Lord our God made a covenant with us at Horeb.


Not with our ancestors did the Lord make this covenant but with us, who are all of us here alive today.


not like the covenant that I made with their ancestors on the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, for they did not continue in my covenant, and so I had no concern for them, says the Lord.
