With that, Joseph hurried out, because he was overcome with affection for his brother, and he was about to weep. So he went into a private room and wept there.


But the woman whose son was alive said to the king, because compassion for her son burned within her, “Please, my lord, give her the living boy; certainly do not kill him!” The other said, “It shall be neither mine nor yours; divide it.”


As a father has compassion for his children, so the Lord has compassion for those who fear him.


for the Lord reproves the one he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights.


My beloved thrust his hand into the opening, and my inmost being yearned for him.


Therefore my heart moans like a harp for Moab and my very soul for Kir-heres.


Therefore the Lord waits to be gracious to you; therefore he will rise up to show mercy to you. For the Lord is a God of justice; blessed are all those who wait for him.

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end;


Say to them: As I live, says the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked but that the wicked turn from their ways and live; turn back, turn back from your evil ways, for why will you die, O house of Israel?


I will heal their disloyalty; I will love them freely, for my anger has turned from them.


Yet for all that, when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not spurn them or abhor them so as to destroy them utterly and break my covenant with them, for I am the Lord their God,


for this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found!’ And they began to celebrate.


But we had to celebrate and rejoice, because this brother of yours was dead and has come to life; he was lost and has been found.’ ”


Indeed, the Lord will vindicate his people, have compassion on his servants, when he sees that their power is gone, neither bond nor free remaining.


For God is my witness, how I long for all of you with the tender affection of Christ Jesus.


So they put away the foreign gods from among them and served the Lord, and he could no longer bear to see Israel suffer.
