For I hear the whispering of many— terror all around!— as they scheme together against me, as they plot to take my life.


And I went to the prophetess, and she conceived and bore a son. Then the Lord said to me, “Name him Maher-shalal-hash-baz,


and go out to the valley of the son of Hinnom at the entry of the Potsherd Gate, and proclaim there the words that I tell you.


therefore the days are surely coming, says the Lord, when this place shall no more be called Topheth or the valley of the son of Hinnom but the valley of Slaughter.


For I hear many whispering: “Terror is all around! Denounce him! Let us denounce him!” All my close friends are watching for me to stumble. “Perhaps he can be enticed, and we can prevail against him and take our revenge on him.”


The priest Zephaniah read this letter in the hearing of the prophet Jeremiah.


Why do I see them terrified? They have fallen back; their warriors are beaten down and have fled in haste. They do not look back— terror is all around! says the Lord.


Do not go out into the field or walk on the road, for the enemy has a sword; terror is on every side.”


Therefore the days are surely coming, says the Lord, when it will no more be called Topheth or the valley of the son of Hinnom but the valley of Slaughter, for they will bury in Topheth until there is no more room.


You invited my enemies from all around as if for a day of festival; and on the day of the anger of the Lord, no one escaped or survived; those whom I bore and reared, my enemy has destroyed.


My hand will be against the prophets who see false visions and utter lying divinations; they shall not be in the council of my people nor be enrolled in the register of the house of Israel, nor shall they enter the land of Israel, and you shall know that I am the Lord God.


Then he brought them outside and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”
