On that day the Lord God of hosts called for weeping and mourning, for baldness and putting on sackcloth,


And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the male slave, so with his master; as with the female slave, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the lender, so with the borrower; as with the creditor, so with the debtor.


Then you shall say to them: Thus says the Lord: I am about to fill all the inhabitants of this land—the kings who sit on David’s throne, the priests, the prophets, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem—with drunkenness.


They shall die of deadly diseases. They shall not be lamented, nor shall they be buried; they shall become like dung on the surface of the ground. They shall perish by the sword and by famine, and their dead bodies shall become food for the birds of the air and for the wild animals of the earth.


eighty men arrived from Shechem and Shiloh and Samaria with their beards shaved and their clothes torn and their bodies gashed, bringing grain offerings and incense to present at the temple of the Lord.


Baldness has come upon Gaza; Ashkelon is silenced. O remnant of Anakim! How long will you gash yourselves?

and they shall be spread before the sun and the moon and all the host of heaven, which they have loved and served, which they have followed, and which they have inquired of and worshiped, and they shall not be gathered or buried; they shall be like dung on the surface of the ground.


You shall not round off the hair on your temples or mar the edges of your beard.


You shall not make any gashes in your flesh for the dead or tattoo any marks upon you: I am the Lord.


For the Lord commands, and he will shatter the great house to bits and the little house to pieces.


When Jesus came to the leader’s house and saw the flute players and the crowd making a commotion,


“You are children of the Lord your God. You must not lacerate yourselves or shave your forelocks for the dead.


And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Also another book was opened, the book of life. And the dead were judged according to their works, as recorded in the books.


Then the kings of the earth and the magnates and the generals and the rich and the powerful and everyone, slave and free, hid in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains,
