but he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel. He even made cast images for the Baals,


Because they have forsaken me and have made offerings to other gods, so that they have provoked me to anger with all the works of their hands, my wrath will be poured out on this place and will not be quenched.’


“But if you turn aside and forsake my statutes and my commandments that I have set before you and go and serve other gods and worship them,


Their land is filled with idols; they bow down to the work of their hands, to what their own fingers have made.


and have hurled their gods into the fire, though they were no gods but the work of human hands—wood and stone—and so they were destroyed.


Then it can be used as fuel. Part of it he takes and warms himself; he kindles a fire and bakes bread. Then he makes a god and worships it, makes it a carved image and bows down before it.


a people who provoke me to my face continually, sacrificing in gardens and offering incense on bricks;


They are worthless, a work of delusion; at the time of their punishment they shall perish.


For the customs of the peoples are false: a tree from the forest is cut down and worked with an ax by the hands of an artisan;


Then the cities of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem will go and cry out to the gods to whom they make offerings, but they will never save them in the time of their trouble.


The Lord of hosts, who planted you, has pronounced evil against you because of the evil that the house of Israel and the house of Judah have done, provoking me to anger by making offerings to Baal.


You have rejected me, says the Lord; you are going backward, so I have stretched out my hand against you and destroyed you— I am weary of relenting.


then you shall say to them: It is because your ancestors have forsaken me, says the Lord, and have gone after other gods and have served and worshiped them and have forsaken me and have not kept my law,


O hope of Israel! O Lord! All who forsake you shall be put to shame; those who turn away from you shall be recorded in the underworld, for they have forsaken the fountain of living water, the Lord.


But my people have forgotten me; they burn offerings to a delusion; they have stumbled in their ways, in the ancient roads, and have gone into bypaths, not the highway,


Because the people have forsaken me and have profaned this place by making offerings in it to other gods whom neither they nor their ancestors nor the kings of Judah have known, and because they have filled this place with the blood of the innocent


for my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living water, and dug out cisterns for themselves, cracked cisterns that can hold no water.


Have you not brought this upon yourself by forsaking the Lord your God, while he led you in the way?


Your wickedness will punish you, and your faithlessness will convict you. Know and see that it is evil and bitter for you to forsake the Lord your God; the fear of me is not in you, says the Lord God of hosts.


But where are your gods that you made for yourself? Let them come, if they can save you, in your time of trouble, for you have as many gods as you have towns, O Judah.


a wind too strong for that. Now it is I who speak in judgment against them.


Because of this the earth shall mourn and the heavens above grow black, for I have spoken; I have purposed; I have not relented, nor will I turn back.


Instead, we will do everything that we have vowed, make offerings to the queen of heaven and pour out libations to her, just as we and our ancestors, our kings and our officials, used to do in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. We used to have plenty of food and prospered and saw no misfortune.


Shall I not punish them for these things? says the Lord, and shall I not bring retribution on a nation such as this?

Everyone is stupid and without knowledge; goldsmiths are all put to shame by their idols, for their images are false, and there is no breath in them.


Do you not see what they are doing in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?


The children gather wood, the fathers kindle fire, and the women knead dough, to make cakes for the queen of heaven, and they pour out drink offerings to other gods, to provoke me to anger.


Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, make offerings to Baal, and go after other gods that you have not known


and you took your embroidered garments to cover them and set my oil and my incense before them.


I the Lord have spoken; the time is coming; I will act. I will not refrain; I will not spare; I will not relent. According to your ways and your doings I will judge you, says the Lord God.


The more I called them, the more they went from me; they kept sacrificing to the Baals and offering incense to idols.


For it is from Israel, an artisan made it; it is not God. The calf of Samaria shall be broken to pieces.


The Lord utters his voice at the head of his army; how vast is his host! Numberless are those who obey his command. Truly the day of the Lord is great, terrible indeed—who can endure it?


At that time they made a calf, offered a sacrifice to the idol, and reveled in the works of their hands.


“The Lord will send upon you disaster, panic, and frustration in everything you attempt to do, until you are destroyed and perish quickly, on account of the evil of your deeds with which you have forsaken me.


The Lord said to Moses, “Soon you will lie down with your ancestors. Then this people will begin to prostitute themselves to the foreign gods in their midst, the gods of the land into which they are going; they will forsake me, breaking my covenant that I have made with them.


If you forsake the Lord and serve foreign gods, then he will turn and do you harm and consume you, after having done you good.”


The rest of humankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands or give up worshiping demons and idols of gold and silver and bronze and stone and wood, which cannot see or hear or walk.
