from mortals—by your hand, O Lord— from mortals whose portion in life is in this world. May their bellies be filled with what you have stored up for them; may their children have more than enough; may they leave something over to their little ones.


Those who trust in their riches will wither, but the righteous will flourish like green leaves.


Riches do not profit in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death.


Wail, for the day of the Lord is near; it will come like destruction from the Almighty!


in the streets they bind on sackcloth; on the housetops and in the squares everyone wails and melts in tears.


Because of this put on sackcloth, lament and wail: “The fierce anger of the Lord has not turned away from us.”


Thus says the Lord: Do not let the wise boast in their wisdom; do not let the mighty boast in their might; do not let the wealthy boast in their wealth;


and say: What a lioness was your mother among lions! She lay down among young lions, rearing her cubs.


Mortal, prophesy, and say: Thus says the Lord God: Wail, “Alas for the day!”


Be dismayed, you farmers; wail, you vinedressers, over the wheat and the barley, for the crops of the field are ruined.


Put on sackcloth and lament, you priests; wail, you ministers of the altar. Come, pass the night in sackcloth, you ministers of my God! Grain offering and drink offering are withheld from the house of your God.


Wake up, you drunkards, and weep, and wail, all you wine drinkers, over the sweet wine, for it is cut off from your mouth.


Your wealthy are full of violence; your inhabitants speak lies with tongues of deceit in their mouths.


Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to save them on the day of the Lord’s wrath; in the fire of his passion the whole earth shall be consumed, for a full, a terrible end he will make of all the inhabitants of the earth.


Jacob ate his fill; Jeshurun grew fat and kicked. You grew fat, bloated, and gorged! He abandoned God who made him and scoffed at the Rock of his salvation.


For the sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the field; its flower falls, and its beauty perishes. It is the same way with the rich; in the midst of a busy life, they will wither away.


But you have dishonored the poor person. Is it not the rich who oppress you? Is it not they who drag you into the courts?


Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a town and spend a year there, doing business and making money.”


Lament and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy into dejection.
