The men of his city, the elders and the nobles who lived in his city, did as Jezebel had sent word to them. Just as it was written in the letters that she had sent to them,


Those who persecute me with evil purpose draw near; they are far from your law.


Moreover, I saw under the sun that, in the place of justice, wickedness was there, and in the place of righteousness, wickedness was there as well.


How the faithful city has become a prostitute! She that was full of justice, righteousness lodged in her— but now murderers!


Listen to me, you stubborn of heart, you who are far from deliverance:


who acquit the guilty for a bribe and deprive the innocent of their rights!


For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel, and the people of Judah are his cherished garden; he expected justice but saw bloodshed; righteousness but heard a cry!


We all growl like bears; like doves we moan mournfully. We wait for justice, but there is none; for salvation, but it is far from us.


No one brings suit justly; no one goes to law honestly; they rely on empty pleas; they speak lies, conceiving mischief and bearing iniquity.


Therefore justice is far from us, and deliverance does not reach us; we wait for light, but there is only darkness; and for brightness, but we walk in gloom.


the prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests rule as the prophets direct; my people love to have it so, but what will you do when the end comes?


You shall say to them: This is the nation that did not obey the voice of the Lord their God and did not accept discipline; truth has perished; it is cut off from their lips.


Because of wickedness, the host was given over to it together with the regular burnt offering; it cast truth to the ground and kept prospering in what it did.

So the law becomes slack, and justice never prevails. The wicked surround the righteous; therefore judgment comes forth perverted.
