Be astounded and stunned; blind yourselves and be blind! Be drunk but not from wine; stagger but not from strong drink!


Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted,


I will make your oppressors eat their own flesh, and they shall be drunk with their own blood as with wine. Then all flesh shall know that I am the Lord your Savior and your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.


Therefore the anger of the Lord was kindled against his people, and he stretched out his hand against them and struck them; the mountains quaked, and their corpses were like refuse in the streets. For all this his anger has not turned away, and his hand is stretched out still.


Rouse yourself, rouse yourself! Stand up, O Jerusalem, you who have drunk at the hand of the Lord the cup of his wrath, who have drunk to the dregs the cup of staggering.


Therefore hear this, you who are wounded, who are drunk but not with wine:


For the Lord will come in fire and his chariots in a whirlwind, to vent his anger in fury and his rebuke in flames of fire.


They will pass through the land, greatly distressed and hungry; when they are hungry, they will be enraged and will curse their king and their gods. They will turn their faces upward,


And the people to whom they prophesy shall be thrown out into the streets of Jerusalem, victims of famine and sword. There shall be no one to bury them—themselves, their wives, their sons, and their daughters—for I will pour out their wickedness upon them.”


If I go out into the field, look—those killed by the sword! And if I enter the city, look—those sick with famine! For both prophet and priest ply their trade throughout the land and have no knowledge.


The Lord has rejected all my warriors in the midst of me; he proclaimed a time against me to crush my young men; the Lord has trodden as in a winepress the virgin daughter Judah.


I called to my lovers, but they deceived me; my priests and elders perished in the city while seeking food to revive their lives.


Arise, cry out in the night, at the beginning of the watches! Pour out your heart like water before the presence of the Lord! Lift your hands to him for the lives of your children, who faint for hunger at the head of every street.


The Lord gave full vent to his wrath; he poured out his hot anger and kindled a fire in Zion that consumed its foundations.


The precious children of Zion, worth their weight in fine gold— how they are reckoned as earthen pots, the work of a potter’s hands!


Young men are compelled to grind, and boys stagger under loads of wood.
