But a prophet of the Lord was there whose name was Oded; he went out to meet the army that came to Samaria and said to them, “Because the Lord, the God of your ancestors, was angry with Judah, he gave them into your hand, but you have killed them in a rage that has reached up to heaven.


Therefore he brought up against them the king of the Chaldeans, who killed their youths with the sword in the house of their sanctuary and had no compassion on young man or young woman, the aged or the feeble; he gave them all into his hand.


He took into exile in Babylon those who had escaped from the sword, and they became servants to him and to his sons until the establishment of the kingdom of Persia,


But because our ancestors had angered the God of heaven, he gave them into the hand of King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this house and carried away the people to Babylonia.


For they persecute those whom you have struck down, and those whom you have wounded they attack still more.


Against a godless nation I send him, and against the people of my wrath I command him, to take spoil and seize plunder, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.


Their infants will be dashed to pieces before their eyes; their houses will be plundered and their wives raped.

that struck down the peoples in wrath with unceasing blows, that ruled the nations in anger with unrelenting persecution.


Therefore I profaned the princes of the sanctuary; I delivered Jacob to utter destruction and Israel to reviling.


They wield bow and spear; they are cruel and have no mercy. The sound of them is like the roaring sea; they ride upon horses, set in array as a warrior for battle, against you, O daughter Babylon!


My transgressions were bound into a yoke; by his hand they were fastened together; they weigh on my neck, sapping my strength; the Lord handed me over to those whom I cannot withstand.


They heard how I was groaning, with no one to comfort me. All my enemies heard of my trouble; they are glad that you have done it. Bring on the day that you have announced, and let them be as I am.


The Lord has destroyed without mercy all the dwellings of Jacob; in his wrath he has broken down the strongholds of daughter Judah; he has brought down to the ground in dishonor the kingdom and its rulers.


The Lord himself has scattered them; he will regard them no more; no honor was shown to the priests, no favor to the elders.


Princes are hung up by their hands; no respect is shown to the elders.


Say to the house of Israel: Thus says the Lord God: I will profane my sanctuary, the pride of your power, the delight of your eyes, and your heart’s desire, and your sons and your daughters whom you left behind shall fall by the sword.


In the abundance of your trade you were filled with violence, and you sinned, so I cast you as a profane thing from the mountain of God, and I drove you out, O guardian cherub, from among the stones of fire.


For the slaughter and violence done to your brother Jacob, shame shall cover you, and you shall be cut off forever.


For as you have drunk on my holy mountain, all the nations shall drink continually; they shall drink and gulp down and shall be as though they had never been.


Then the angel of the Lord said, “O Lord of hosts, how long will you withhold mercy from Jerusalem and the cities of Judah, with which you have been angry these seventy years?”


and I am extremely angry with the nations that are at ease, for while I was only a little angry, they made the disaster worse.


For the judgment you give will be the judgment you get, and the measure you give will be the measure you get.


a grim-faced nation showing no respect to the old or favor to the young.


For judgment will be without mercy to anyone who has shown no mercy; mercy triumphs over judgment.
