Then the anger of the Lord was kindled against his people, and he abhorred his heritage;


The ox knows its owner and the donkey its master’s crib, but Israel does not know; my people do not understand.


For before the harvest, when the blossom is over and the flower becomes a ripening grape, he will cut off the shoots with pruning hooks, and the spreading branches he will hew away.


But now thus says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are mine.


everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.”


Thus says the Lord who made you, who formed you in the womb and will help you: Do not fear, O Jacob my servant, Jeshurun whom I have chosen.


Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, who formed you in the womb: I am the Lord, who made all things, who alone stretched out the heavens, who by myself spread out the earth;


Therefore my people go into exile for lack of knowledge; their nobles are dying of hunger, and their multitude is parched with thirst.


That is why the Lord did not have pity on their young people or compassion on their orphans and widows, for everyone was godless and an evildoer, and every mouth spoke folly. For all this his anger has not turned away; his hand is stretched out still.


The Lord once called you, “A green olive tree, fair with goodly fruit,” but with the roar of a great tempest he will set fire to it, and its branches will be consumed.


And I will dash them one against another, parents and children together, says the Lord. I will not pity or spare or have compassion when I destroy them.


For thus says the Lord: Do not enter the house of mourning or go to lament or bemoan them, for I have taken away my peace from this people, says the Lord, my steadfast love and mercy.


and the peaceful folds are devastated because of the fierce anger of the Lord.


“For my people are foolish; they do not know me; they are stupid children; they have no understanding. They are skilled in doing evil but do not know how to do good.”


Even the stork in the heavens knows its times, and the turtledove, swallow, and crane observe the time of their coming, but my people do not know the ordinance of the Lord.


But it was plucked up in fury, cast down to the ground; the east wind dried it up; its fruit was stripped off; its strong stem was withered; the fire consumed it.


say to the forest of the Negeb: Hear the word of the Lord: Thus says the Lord God: I will kindle a fire in you, and it shall devour every green tree in you and every dry tree; the blazing flame shall not be quenched, and all faces from south to north shall be scorched by it.


As for me, my eye will not spare, nor will I have pity, but I will bring down their deeds upon their heads.”


I will not punish your daughters when they prostitute themselves nor your daughters-in-law when they commit adultery, for the men themselves go aside with prostitutes and sacrifice with female attendants; thus a people without understanding comes to ruin.


My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge! Because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being a priest to me; and since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.


For this people’s heart has grown dull, and their ears are hard of hearing, and they have shut their eyes, so that they might not look with their eyes, and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and turn— and I would heal them.’


When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what is sown in the heart; this is what was sown on the path.


Even now the ax is lying at the root of the trees; therefore every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.


Whoever does not abide in me is thrown away like a branch and withers; such branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned.


And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them over to an unfit mind and to do things that should not be done.


foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless.


You must observe them and perform them, for this will show your wisdom and discernment to the peoples, who, when they hear all these statutes, will say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise and discerning people!’


by hindering us from speaking to the gentiles so that they may be saved. Thus they have constantly been filling up the measure of their sins, but wrath has overtaken them at last.


For judgment will be without mercy to anyone who has shown no mercy; mercy triumphs over judgment.
