for from Jerusalem a remnant shall go out and from Mount Zion a band of survivors. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.


For you deliver a humble people, but the haughty eyes you bring down.


You will destroy their offspring from the earth and their children from among humankind.


Human wrath serves only to praise you, when you bind the last bit of your wrath around you.


The courageous were stripped of their spoil; they sank into sleep; none of the troops was able to lift a hand.


Haughty eyes and a proud heart— the lamp of the wicked—are sin.

Has he struck them down as he struck down those who struck them? Or have they been killed as their killers were killed?


Therefore by this the guilt of Jacob will be expiated, and this will be the full fruit of the removal of his sin: when he makes all the stones of the altars like chalkstones crushed to pieces; no sacred poles or incense altars will remain standing.


so I will again do amazing things with this people, shocking and amazing. The wisdom of their wise shall perish, and the discernment of the discerning shall be hidden.


Woe to the destroyer, who yourself have not been destroyed; you treacherous one, with whom no one has dealt treacherously! When you have ceased to destroy, you will be destroyed; and when you have stopped dealing treacherously, you will be dealt with treacherously.


“Whom have you mocked and reviled? Against whom have you raised your voice and haughtily lifted your eyes? Against the Holy One of Israel!


Because you have raged against me and your arrogance has come to my ears, I will put my hook in your nose and my bit in your mouth; I will turn you back on the way by which you came.


People are bowed down, everyone is brought low, and the eyes of the haughty are humbled.


But all of you are kindlers of fire, lighters of firebrands. Walk in the flame of your fire and among the brands that you have kindled! This is what you shall have from my hand: you shall lie down in torment.


their iniquities and their ancestors’ iniquities together, says the Lord; because they offered incense on the mountains and reviled me on the hills, I will measure into their laps full payment for their actions.


and all the people knew it— Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria— but in pride and arrogance of heart they said:


See, I am beginning to bring disaster on the city that is called by my name, and how can you possibly avoid punishment? You shall not go unpunished, for I am summoning a sword against all the inhabitants of the earth, says the Lord of hosts.


Therefore, thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: I am going to punish the king of Babylon and his land as I punished the king of Assyria.


The arrogant one shall stumble and fall, with no one to raise him up, and I will kindle a fire in his cities, and it will devour everything around him.


Therefore thus says the Lord God: Because it towered high and set its top among the clouds and its heart was proud of its height,


All this is in order that no trees by the waters may grow to lofty height or set their tops among the clouds and that no trees that drink water may reach up to them in height. For all of them are handed over to death, to the world below; along with mortals, with those who go down to the Pit.


He shall pitch his palatial tents between the sea and the beautiful holy mountain. Yet he shall come to his end, with no one to help him.


Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven, for all his works are truth, and his ways are justice; he is able to bring low those who walk in pride.


But ships shall come from Kittim and shall afflict Asshur and Eber, and he also shall perish forever.”


“Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad, for the tree is known by its fruit.


For out of the heart come evil intentions, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander.


but I feared provocation by the enemy, for their adversaries might misunderstand and say, “Our hand is triumphant; it was not the Lord who did all this.” ’


For the time has come for judgment to begin with the household of God; if it begins with us, what will be the end for those who do not obey the gospel of God?
