But the people who followed Omri overcame the people who followed Tibni son of Ginath, so Tibni died, and Omri became king.

Then Hoshea son of Elah made a conspiracy against Pekah son of Remaliah, attacked him, and killed him; he reigned in place of him, in the twentieth year of Jotham son of Uzziah.


Jehu drew his bow with all his strength and shot Joram between the shoulders, so that the arrow pierced his heart, and he sank in his chariot.


He said, “Throw her down.” So they threw her down; some of her blood spattered on the wall and on the horses, which trampled on her.


“The godless in heart cherish anger; they do not cry for help when he binds them.


Have they no knowledge, all the evildoers who eat up my people as they eat bread and do not call upon the Lord?


Yet you did not call upon me, O Jacob; but you have been weary of me, O Israel!


From ages past no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you, who works for those who wait for him.


We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a filthy cloth. We all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.


There is no one who calls on your name or attempts to take hold of you, for you have hidden your face from us and have delivered us into the hand of our iniquity.


The people did not turn to him who struck them or seek the Lord of hosts.


And I sought for anyone among them who would repair the wall and stand in the breach before me on behalf of the land, so that I would not destroy it, but I found no one.


Just as it is written in the law of Moses, all this calamity has come upon us. We did not entreat the favor of the Lord our God, turning from our iniquities and reflecting on his fidelity.


Where now is your king, that he may save you? Where in all your cities are your rulers, of whom you said, “Give me a king and rulers”?


I will return again to my place until they acknowledge their guilt and seek my face. In their distress they will beg my favor:


Israel’s pride testifies against him; yet they do not return to the Lord their God or seek him, for all this.


They do not cry to me from the heart, but they wail upon their beds; they gash themselves for grain and wine; they rebel against me.


They made kings but not through me; they set up princes but without my knowledge. With their silver and gold they made idols for their own destruction.


Woe to those who devise wickedness and evil deeds on their beds! When the morning dawns, they perform it, because it is in their power.
