And Abraham resided as an alien many days in the land of the Philistines.


“I am a stranger and an alien residing among you; give me property among you for a burying place, so that I may bury my dead out of my sight.”


When the boys grew up, Esau was a skillful hunter, a man of the field, while Jacob was a quiet man, living in tents.


May he give to you the blessing of Abraham, to you and to your offspring with you, so that you may take possession of the land where you now live as an alien, land that God gave to Abraham.”


Laban overtook Jacob. Now Jacob had pitched his tent in the hill country, and Laban with his kinsfolk camped in the hill country of Gilead.


Jacob came to his father Isaac at Mamre, or Kiriath-arba, that is, Hebron, where Abraham and Isaac had resided as aliens.


For their possessions were too great for them to live together; the land where they were staying could not support them because of their livestock.


Jacob said to Pharaoh, “The years of my earthly sojourn are one hundred thirty; few and hard have been the years of my life. They do not compare with the years of the life of my ancestors during their long sojourn.”


When they were few in number, of little account and strangers in it,


nor shall you ever build a house or sow seed, nor shall you plant a vineyard or even own one, but you shall live in tents all your days, that you may live many days in the land where you reside.’


In the same way, when God desired to show even more clearly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it by an oath,
