Now Sarai was barren; she had no child.


Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, bore him no children. She had an Egyptian slave whose name was Hagar,


For the Lord had closed fast all the wombs of the house of Abimelech because of Sarah, Abraham’s wife.


Isaac prayed to the Lord for his wife because she was barren, and the Lord granted his prayer, and his wife Rebekah conceived.


Now Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father had blessed him, and Esau said to himself, “The days of mourning for my father are approaching; then I will kill my brother Jacob.”


So Jacob went in to Rachel also, and he loved Rachel more than Leah. He served Laban for another seven years.


Leah conceived and bore a son, and she named him Reuben, for she said, “Because the Lord has looked on my affliction, surely now my husband will love me.”


Then God remembered Rachel, and God heeded her and opened her womb.


The sons of Leah: Reuben (Jacob’s firstborn), Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun.


Sons are indeed a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward.


Then the Lord said, “I have observed the misery of my people who are in Egypt; I have heard their cry on account of their taskmasters. Indeed, I know their sufferings,


but I have hated Esau; I have made his hill country a desolation and his heritage a desert for jackals.


“Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me,


“No one can serve two masters, for a slave will either hate the one and love the other or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.


But they had no children because Elizabeth was barren, and both were getting on in years.


“Whoever comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and even life itself, cannot be my disciple.


Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life.


Then he gave him the covenant of circumcision. And so Abraham became the father of Isaac and circumcised him on the eighth day, and Isaac did likewise to Jacob and Jacob to the twelve patriarchs.


“If a man has two wives, one of them loved and the other disliked, and if both the loved and the disliked have borne him sons, the firstborn being the son of the one who is disliked,


So Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife. When they came together, the Lord made her conceive, and she bore a son.


In due time Hannah conceived and bore a son. She named him Samuel, for she said, “I have asked him of the Lord.”


For this child I prayed, and the Lord has granted me the petition that I made to him.


but to Hannah he gave a double portion because he loved her, though the Lord had closed her womb.


And the Lord took note of Hannah; she conceived and bore three sons and two daughters. And the boy Samuel grew up in the presence of the Lord.
