Then the returned exiles did so. Ezra the priest selected men, heads of families, according to their families, each of them designated by name. On the first day of the tenth month they sat down to examine the matter.


They made a proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem to all the returned exiles that they should assemble at Jerusalem


so that the people could not distinguish the sound of the joyful shout from the sound of the people’s weeping, for the people shouted so loudly that the sound was heard far away.


The people of Israel, the priests and the Levites, and the rest of the returned exiles celebrated the dedication of this house of God with joy.


On the first day of the first month the journey up from Babylon was begun, and on the first day of the fifth month he came to Jerusalem, for the gracious hand of his God was upon him.
