Now there was a great outcry of the people and of their wives against their Jewish kin.


After thinking it over, I contended with the nobles and the officials; I said to them, “You are all taking interest from your own people.” And I called a great assembly to deal with them


They forgot God, their Savior, who had done great things in Egypt,


who do not lend money at interest and do not take a bribe against the innocent. Those who do these things shall never be moved.


Such is the end of all who are greedy for gain; it takes away the life of its possessors.


Your princes are rebels and companions of thieves. Everyone loves a bribe and runs after gifts. They do not defend the orphan, and the widow’s cause does not come before them.


For you have forgotten God your Savior and have not remembered the Rock of your refuge; therefore, though you plant pleasant gardens and set out branches of a foreign god,


The dogs have a mighty appetite; they never have enough. The shepherds also have no understanding; they have all turned to their own way, to their own gain, one and all.


Can a young woman forget her ornaments or a bride her attire? Yet my people have forgotten me, days without number.


A voice on the bare heights is heard, the plaintive weeping of Israel’s children, because they have perverted their way; they have forgotten the Lord their God:


For from the least to the greatest of them, everyone is greedy for unjust gain; and from prophet to priest, everyone deals falsely.


O that my head were a spring of water and my eyes a fountain of tears, so that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people!

Therefore thus says the Lord God: Because you have forgotten me and cast me behind your back, therefore bear the consequences of your lewdness and prostitutions.


I will lead people upon you—my people Israel—and they shall possess you, and you shall be their inheritance. No longer shall you bereave them of children.


“You shall not defraud your neighbor; you shall not steal; and you shall not keep for yourself the wages of a laborer until morning.


You shall not lend them your money at interest taken in advance or provide them food at a profit.


Hear this, you who trample on the needy, and bring to ruin the poor of the land,


buying the poor for silver and the needy for a pair of sandals and selling the sweepings of the wheat.”


“But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you lock people out of the kingdom of heaven. For you do not go in yourselves, and when others are going in you stop them.


“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.


The Pharisee, standing by himself, was praying thus, ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people: thieves, rogues, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.


Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, “Look, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor, and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will pay back four times as much.”


He said to them, “Collect no more than the amount prescribed for you.”


But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother or sister who is sexually immoral or greedy or an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler. Do not even eat with such a one.


thieves, the greedy, drunkards, revilers, swindlers—none of these will inherit the kingdom of God.


You must not distort justice; you must not show partiality; and you must not accept a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and subverts the cause of those who are in the right.


“You shall not charge interest on loans to another Israelite, interest on money, interest on provisions, interest on anything that is lent.


“ ‘Cursed be anyone who takes a bribe to shed innocent blood.’ All the people shall say, ‘Amen!’


You were unmindful of the Rock that bore you; you forgot the God who gave you birth.


not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, and not a lover of money.


Woe to them! For they go the way of Cain and abandon themselves to Balaam’s error for the sake of gain and perish in Korah’s rebellion.
