His prayer, and how God received his entreaty, all his sin and his faithlessness, the sites on which he built high places and set up the sacred poles and the images, before he humbled himself, these are written in the records of the seers.


you shall not bow down to their gods or serve them or follow their practices, but you shall utterly demolish them and break their pillars in pieces.

“You shall not plant any tree as a sacred pole beside the altar that you make for the Lord your God,


nor shall you set up a stone pillar—things that the Lord your God hates.


But this is how you must deal with them: break down their altars, smash their pillars, cut down their sacred poles, and burn their idols with fire.


For your part, do not make a covenant with the inhabitants of this land; tear down their altars.’ But you have not obeyed my command. See what you have done!


That night the Lord said to him, “Take your father’s bull, the second bull seven years old, and pull down the altar of Baal that belongs to your father and cut down the sacred pole that is beside it


and build an altar to the Lord your God on the top of the stronghold here, in proper order; then take the second bull and offer it as a burnt offering with the wood of the sacred pole that you cut down.”
